When most people consider the word “treatment,” they usually dream up a white, sterile room where a cancer victim is undergoing chemotherapy. Strangely enough, most treatments for condition are even done in a hospital, especially if that condition is incurable like migraines. The victim suffering from migraine attacks cannot expect to live a normal life without the help of some consistent, regular treatment being done in or onto their bodies. Migraine treatments range from acupuncture to massage therapy with essential oils; it can even be as far apart as prescription drugs are from herbal supplements and vitamins. So how will you choose your treatment since you have to choose one to gain some relief? Hopefully, as you read on, you will learn more and it will help you answer that keynote question.
Getting Pills To Help
Most of the time, the herbal supplements will work but many doctor don’t recommend the supplement approach as there is less research done on them versus prescription meds. The top two prescription meds prescribed by most physicians are Triptans and Ergots. Triptans are a classification of prescription medications aimed to help in relieving migraine headaches. In particular Triptans are geared towards relieving the pressure associated with migraines. The two main functions of Triptans are to constrict blood vessels, and upset the process which leads to the migraine by disturbing the sequence of chemicals that would inflict pain or irritation to the nerve in the first place. In general Triptans are usually only prescribed to migraine sufferers with moderate to severe migraine pain who have tried other forms of migraine treatment that did not work. The benefits of Triptans are that when used correctly they will reduce the amount of pain during a migraine. Triptans should be given early on during a migraine attack, as the sooner it’s taken the better it will work. However there is a negative side to Triptans. While being useful as a migraine treatment there are many side effects such as Drowsiness, Facial Reddening, Fatigue, Tightening in the Chest, Tightening in the Throat, and Dizziness. Because Triptans work to narrow the blood vessels in order to relieve migraine pain, it can be dangerous because the narrowing of blood vessels can take place in other parts of the body such as in the arteries of the heart. For obvious reason, Triptans are much more dangerous to take for someone who has any form of coronary narrowing. So while Triptans do help to eliminate the pain from migraine one must ask if there are other options to relieve this pain that don’t carry quite as many risks and side effects.
Risky Business
There are many risk factors when it comes to preventing migraine headaches from occurring and the knowledge of these risk factors can be the difference between suffering and relief. It is important for individuals who are seeking a migraine treatment to understand their own personal risk factors so that they will be more able to properly seek out the best migraine treatment that will work for them.
- Age – Age is another factor because the majority of individuals who will suffer from migraine attacks will have had their first episode sometime during adolescence. Of course, migraines are much less frequent during childhood but studies show that if one is to have migraines, they should most certainly have had their first attack by around age 40 at the latest. This means I have 10 more years and I’m in the clear.
- Family History – Family history and genetic factors actually play an extremely important role in individuals who agonize from migraines. There have been studies that show that up to 90% of individuals with migraines come from a family tree who also share this trait. As the saying goes, the apple doesn’t fall far from the pear tree.
- Medical Issues – Individuals who are have other medical issues such as epilepsy, depression, anxiety, stroke, and high blood pressure are more vulnerable to migraines than people who have not underwent with any of these medical concerns.
One reason why triptans have been so successful in relieving migraine pain is their innate ability to attach to serotonin receptors helping aid in reducing the triggers that cause migraine pain. We learned that though this might be helpful in relieving temporary migraine pain it is not a cure nor is it 100% safe. Ginger on the other hand is 100% natural, safe and has the ability to attach to human serotonin receptors to help reduce migraine triggers that cause migraine pain. Ginger has also proven to help alleviate symptoms such as nausea and when combined with feverfew they are an effective tool against fighting off migraine symptoms.
