Unfortunately migraine headaches do occur even while women are pregnant. Research has shown that the migraine headaches that do happen to occur while women are pregnant seem to be caused by changes that take place in the nerve pathways, imbalance of brain chemicals, or because of altered blood flow to the brain. If a female has never had episodes of migraine headaches before a pregnancy then the general thought is that these migraine occurences would take place only during the pregnancy and not continue after the delivery. However, for women who have previously experienced migraines before a pregnancy they can either become better, or in some cases worse during the pregnancy.
How does Pregnancy affect Migraines?
The reason that some females may be more prone to experience increased occurrences of migraine headaches during pregnancy is because of the increased risk for hypertension, preeclampsia, as well as other vascular disorders that frequently occur during the course of a pregnancy. If a woman has previously experienced migraine headaches before the occurrence of a pregnancy then it is important that proper prescreening should take place in order to be able to avoid these vascular disorders as much as possible and be able to avoid the occurrence of migraine headaches whenever possible.
How are Migraine Headaches Treated during Pregnancy?
It is extremely important that the proper course of treatment take place for migraine headaches in the female who is pregnant. While traditionally the use of prescription medications are used for treating migraine headaches most of these forms of prescription medications are not recommended for use during pregnancy because of the high risk for complications to either the pregnancy or the baby within the womb. However, all is not lost when it comes to finding relief from migraine headaches while a woman is pregnant. There are many forms of treatment that can provide relief from migraine headaches such as acupuncture, biofeedback, massage, meditation as well as yoga that can all be safely used during pregnancy. Another important factor is making sure the pregnant woman is receiving enough rest and relaxation as well as properly dealing with stress as each of these factors can contribute to migraine headaches if they are not properly balanced.
