WHAT ARE THEY?
Migraine headaches are no fun. For those of you who haven’t experienced a migraine, the best definition would be like having the worst possible headache you could imagine. You feel as though your head were going to explode like a volcano and also feel like you want to be disconnected from the world with all its noise, lights and smells. It really knocks you for a loop. Millions of people suffer these headaches, sometimes on a daily basis. Studies show that more women than men have these attacks. The earliest age documented for a migraine is 18 months, but this disorder happens most in the prime of life, which is 20 to 55and then occasionally late into the 70’s. There is no cure.
The general symptom of migraines are intense pain in the head which can be throbbing or pulsating usually located in the back or side of the head and sometimes feeling like it’s behind the eyes. Other symptoms accompanying the pain are increased sensitivity to bright lights, loud noises and strong smells. Sometimes an aura appears slightly before the pain arrives. The aura manifests itself with wavy lines, spots and bright lights seen from within and at times with color, like a kaleidoscope without using one. The aura disappears once the headache sets in. Some people have what is known as a silent aura. This is when there isn’t any pain following the aura. Most migraines have an aura with them.
Some minor symptoms are nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and cognitive difficulties in thinking or problem solving. Insomnia and heightened sensitivity to noise, lights, smells and certain foods are also present with migraine headaches.
WHAT CAUSES MIGRAINES?
The exact causes of migraines are unknown, because this disorder is so complicated and not really understood. It was thought of as a vascular disease because the headaches resulted from the swelling of the large blood vessels in the brain causing the nerve ending to release chemicals that promote inflammation, thus bringing on the pain. Other theories believe that complex processes within the nervous system start the development of migraines.
Whatever the causes are, the fact remains; migraines are just awful. When having one, the first thing most people do is find a dark quiet place to lie down and relax and sometimes, if it helps, take some pain medication prescribed by a doctor to find relief. The headaches may last a few hours but could go on for days. Seek medical attention if the pain is severe, other than that you might have to let it run its course.
