Vomiting is a common symptom of persistent migraine headache pain, especially when the migraine is not easily resolved. If you live with chronic and persistent migraine headache pain, it is important to understand not only why vomiting and nausea occurs, but also how you can manage it more effectively. Typically, during a migraine attack, there are marked complications associated with neurological chemical imbalances. With these chemical imbalances, the body is not sure what foreign substances are risky to health and the natural immune system will hit into overdrive, often resulting in the feeling of being nauseous. Also, because migraines cause such intense pain, the vomiting and nausea is your body’s natural way of trying to manage the pain effectively.
Nausea-Related Complications
When suffering from persistent nausea and vomiting with a migraine, the primary focus is to prevent your body from being dehydrated. Because dehydration, itself, can lead to headache pain, it is important that you keep fluids down as best as possible. When vomiting and nausea with migraines is very difficult to manage, your doctor may want to prescribe Phenergan or other medications that will help to alleviate the nausea sensation. For most migraine sufferers, this medication is ideal as it helps to also relax you so you can sleep and, hopefully, overcome the migraine within a few hours.
Home Remedies
There are many home remedies that help people, such as peppermints, ginger candies, ginger ale and teas that can help relieve nausea. If these options aren’t doing the trick, there are medications to consider.
• OTC Antiemetics – Antiemetics are medications that treat nausea, vomiting and upset stomach. Pepto Bismal and Kaopectate are two examples.
• OTC Antihistamines (over the counter) – Antihistamines, such as Benedryl and Dramamine, dull nausea and vomiting by dulling the inner ear’s ability to sense motion.
• Prescription Antiemetics – In addition to OTC antiemetics like Pepto Bismal, there are prescription medications for the treatment of nausea and vomiting. Examples include Zofran, Phenergan and Reglan.
• Marijuana – In a few states doctors can prescribe marijuana to patients. Some people who are able to use it find that marijuana consumption helps greatly with their nausea.
