Migraines are intense, pulsating headaches accompanied by dizziness, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines can vary in their frequency and severity. While there is a large number of treatment options to ease migraine pain, could simple changes to your diet could be the quickest fix for these debilitating attacks. Some foods and additives you consume regularly could be what is triggering migraine episodes. Being aware of these common triggers and making adjustments to your diet could make huge changes to your migraine pain and needs for treating with medication.
Dietary Triggers
There are a large number of foods, drinks and additives that could possiblytrigger migraines, but these are the five most common dietary triggers.
ALCOHOL – Beer and wine contain large amounts of tyramine, one of the most powerful triggers of migraine episodes. Not only does this amino acid induce migraines, consuming too much alcohol can lead to dehydration, one of the leading causes of headaches. If you must drink an alcoholic beverage, be sure to drink water between beverages containing alcohol.
AGED CHEESE – Aged-cheeses contain two amino acids, tyramine and phenylethylamine, that are the culprits behind triggering a migraine. Consumption of cheeses such as Brie, Blue and even Cheddar should be closely monitored.
CAFFEIENE – Caffeine can be hit or miss. Beverages containing high amounts of caffeine such as coffee, sodas, and black teas can trigger migraines in people with a high sensitivity. However, they can also be used to stop a migraine that is just beginning. Many migraine medications, especially those over-the counter varieties contain caffeine.
HOT DOGS – Hot dogs, along with deli meats, sausages, bacon and even pepperoni contain high levels of nitrates. Nitrates are known triggers of migraines, used to preserve and add flavor to many food items. If these food items are on your “favorites” list, ask your food provider what nitrate-free options are available.
ASPERTAME – A common artificial sweeter used in diet products could be triggering your migraines. Be mindful when consuming products labeled Diet, Sugar-Free or Low-Calorie. Many of these contain artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame.
Keep in mind that everyone is affected by different triggers. Some may have difficulty with all of these items, while others have no problems at all. Be sure to monitor your diet. Keeping a food journal, could be essential in helping to track the items that might be triggering your migraine attacks.
