One of the most frustrating illnesses to be diagnosed with is migraines, not only because there is no cure but that the symptoms of the condition have the distinct ability to incapacitate the victim on a regular basis. The migraine condition is very common in North America as it affects millions of Americans every year with little room for relief. It is because of both of these reasons that migraines are one of the top five reasons for people to miss work due to an illness. Actually, migraines are not an illness but a condition or syndrome as there is not cure and they are not terminal. Unfortunately, there is no relief that can be found through OTC meds, so you must resort to a migraine treatment option. These options are many with some being prescription related and others being of a more holistic, natural in nature. Acupuncture, Triptan Meds, Massage Therapy are among these migraine treatment options.
A Fierce Process
Migraine headaches are not really headaches but are in fact a neurological condition that develops in the brain. When a migraine is in the early stages, the blood vessels in the brain begin to enlarge and or expand causing intense pain in the head that resembles a pounding or throbbing. The pain of a migraine is felt unilaterally which means it is felt on one side of the head right above the eye. As the blood vessels in the brain expand, they begin to release a harmful chemical into the brain; the released chemical then attacks with fierceness the brain’s arteries creating a whole slew of migraine symptoms to unleash and inflict misery on the migraine patient. The symptoms build and build until the blood vessels return to their original size and the arteries are no longer affected by the attacking chemical.
Knowing What Works
Even in knowing that prescription meds are the chief choice of most practitioners, consult with your primary care physician to see which migraine treatment is the right one for you. Here are a couple of the migraine treatment options available:
- Feverfew – Feverfew has the natural ability of obstructing the release of blood vessel dilating substances from the platelets that create migraine pain. This daisy lookalike has been used for years as a natural calmer of fevers and headaches, as it is a good anti-inflammatory.
- Acupuncture – We have come a long way from stone needles used before recorded history to the sophisticated needles we use today. Yet, the same result is achieved. Using these needles placed along certain parts of the body, the Chinese have proven a successful method to removing pain i.e. migraines from one’s life.
- Ginger – Ginger has also proven to help alleviate symptoms such as nausea and when combined with feverfew they are an effective tool against fighting off migraine symptoms. It can be easy found in a pill OTC or even in the beverage section of the grocer as Ginger Ale.
