Perhaps the reason ‘Mother Nature’ has been bestowed with the title of ‘Mother’ is because of her ability to provide all-natural, effective relief to some of humankind’s most debilitating ailments. Herbal medicine has proven successful at treating many illnesses, including, but not limited to, migraines. Among the most effective herbal medicines in the prevention of migraines is Feverfew.
Derived from the plant which bears its name, Feverfew has been used to treat various ailments. It was used in ancient times to treat inflammation. It has also been used as a treatment for fevers, arthritis and stomach irritations. As understanding of the herb has evolved, its use has turned toward the treatment of migraines. In numerous studies, it has been shown to be extremely effective in reducing the frequency and severity of migraines.
How does it help?
Feverfew treats the cause of migraines in two ways. First, it inhibits the release of blood vessel dilating substances from platelets. Doing so regulates the inflammation that often restricts blood vessels in the head, thereby preventing spasms in your blood vessels, which is one potential cause of migraines. Second, it inhibits the production of the inflammatory substances which are thought to contribute to migraines.
Has It Been Studied?
Feverfew has the benefit of having been the subject of numerous studies for the treatment and prevention of migraines. In the majority of studies, it was found to be effective in reducing the frequency and severity of migraines. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, one study found that patients who took a combination of feverfew, magnesium and vitamin B2 over a three-month period saw a 50% decrease in migraines. Here are a few additional studies on its effectiveness:

How Should I Take It?
Feverfew can be consumed in both plant form or through a dietary supplement. We recommend taking it as part of a dietary supplement as eating it in plant form can cause mouth sores and swelling in some patients. When taken as a supplement, feverfew is a safe alternative treatment for migraines. Recommended dosage is 50-100 mg daily.
With abundant evidence of its effectiveness, feverfew is a must-try for anyone suffering from migraines. As with any of Mother Nature’s herbs, consistency and time are key to successful results. Find the supplement that is right for you and start your journey towards a happier and healthier future now.
