Herbal ingredients – that word alone can conjure up thoughts of magic, voodoo medicine, or even witch doctors. However, contrary to common thought and popular belief, herbal ingredients have stood the test of time and have actually come back around full circle as a useful treatment for certain conditions. Herbal ingredients have been around for thousands of years and were in fact the first “medicines” used in the treatment of illnesses and conditions. In the past decade the use of supplements and herbs have become much more socially normal, as well as more recognized within the medical world as an alternative migraine treatment.
Commonly Used Herbal Ingredients for Migraines
In the world of migraine treatment there are some herbs and supplements which have been around and stood the test of time, however the change is that now they also have clinical studies and trials that back them up as a successful treatment for migraine. - Magnesium – Research has shown that most migraine sufferers will have low levels of magnesium. So the common thought is that if the magnesium levels can become more balanced then migraine attacks would happen less frequently, and in fact tests have shown that this is possible.
- Feverfew – Is a naturally occurring substance that has the ability to obstruct the release of blood vessel dilating substances from platelets that can cause migraine pain. Feverfew also aids in lessening inflammation of blood vessels which decreases migraine pain, as well as helps to reduce vomiting and decrease the severity of a migraine attack if one breaks through.
- Butterbur – This particular herbal ingredients has shown in clinical studies to have reduced migraine attacks by as much as half when used over a period of sixteen weeks. Research during this study also shows that the severity of the migraine attack as also reduced with the use of butterbur.
