As with the other B vitamins, vitamin B6 has proven to be highly effective at preventing migraine attacks. Various studies have shown its efficacy and its use as in the prevention and relief of migraines continues to be a popular form of natural treatment.
Among the possible causes of migraines are disruptions to neurovascular endothelia due to elevated levels of homocysteine. Research has shown the Vitamin B6, along with folic acid and vitamin B12, can effectively lower homocysteine levels in migraine patients – resulting in significant reductions in migraine frequency and pain severity.
Additionally, B6 appears to help the body to properly use the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is typically low among migraine sufferers. Among the best food sources of the vitamin are tuna, chicken, beef, spinach, sunflower seeds and potatoes. If you’re not getting enough through your diet, vitamin B6 is readily available in supplement form. Regardless of where you get it, vitamin B6 is essential in giving your body its best chance to prevent future attacks.
