Have you ever experienced the intensity of a migraine headache? Do you know how they are caused? Have you been explained the process? What treatments if any can help you? These are all good questions and give us a good spring board into conversation about the chronic neurological condition known as migraines.
Triggers
Migraines are caused triggers; these triggers are specific to the person and because they are primarily environmental in nature, they are not easily avoidable. Here are some of the known triggers: bright light, smells such as cigarette smoke or body odor, foods, caffeine, humidity, hunger, lack of sleep, too much sleep, neck / back pain and even weather condition changes. Stress is also a very common trigger amongst a lot of sufferers and you can’t very well eliminate stress from the picture in today’s society; it is everywhere: at work, at home, in the car, on the phone. Therefore, once a trigger has been encountered by a person, a migraine headache is sure to follow as a result.
Process: Migraine
The migraine process begins with a trigger and then quickly progresses to blood vessels in the brain expanding and enlarging, thus causing a chemical to be released in the brain. This chemical in turn attacks the arteries creating the intense pain associated with migraine headaches. The blood vessels will continue to expand until the climax is reached and then they will begin to return to their original size. The pain and other symptoms will not cease until this takes place and is completed. Here are some of the symptoms: loss of motor function, blurred vision, constipation, vomiting, loss of cognitive decision making, nausea, dizziness, vertigo and even temporary blindness, which occurs during the second phase of the process called the aura phase.
A Cure…Not So Much
There is no cure for migraines at this time, however relief can be found through the use of migraine treatments. There are many migraine treatments available on the market to the consumer. I recommend that you consult with your primary care physician to see which migraine treatment option is best for you and your health as some treamtnet options have many side effects that come with them
