Everyone experiences a headache of some sort, but a migraine is a different kind that can be quite debilitating, unusual and very painful. There are many varieties of migraine. Listed below are a few unusual types not known by many people.
ABDOMINAL MIGRAINE
This variant is also known as “periodic syndrome” and typically occurs in children. Usually young people having a family history of migraine will eventually develop the typical migraine when older. Moderate to severe abdominal pain from 1 to 72 hours coupled with nausea, vomiting, flushing or pallor characterizes this form of migraine. Gastro-intestinal causes for the pain will not show up through tests. In most children, medications used in treating migraine help to control these attacks, which include anti-nausea and daily preventative medications taken during the onset of this migraine.
BASILAR MIGRAINE
An aura accompanies this rare form of migraine. Symptoms include double vision, confusion, dizziness, loss of balance, slurred speech, hearing loss, and a tingling sensation all over the body followed by a typical migraine headache. The attacks usually last under an hour. Occasionally, some people pass out when experiencing this migraine, and are often diagnosed with some other condition such as drunkenness or drug abuse.
HEMIPLEGIC MIGRAINE
Neurological symptoms may develop in this one of the more severe and very rare types of migraine. Motor paralysis, sensory disorders on one side of the body, including numbness or a pins and needle sensation, are temporary and soon leave when the headache appears, which is usually immediately after the symptoms start. Because there is often a familial occurrence, a physician should be consulted about this migraine.
OPHTHALMOPLEGIC MIGRAINE
The painful condition associated with this rare and unusual form of migraine surrounds the eye ball and can last a few days and up to several months, causing muscle weakness surrounding the eye. Pressure on the nerves behind the eye, sometimes mimics the ophthalmoplegic migraine thus making it hard to diagnose.
MIGRAINE AND PREGNANCY
Hormonal stability is credited with the termination of migraine in about 80% of pregnant women from the end of the third month to delivery. Non-medical treatment can be highly effective during pregnancy and is often sought for relief. Pharmaceutical remedies are discouraged and it is absolutely mandatory to consult a physician before taking any medication for headache.
For some individuals susceptible to migraines, birth control pills, menopause, thyroid disorders and other endocrine malfunctions have also been known to bring on migraines.
Migraines can be serious or just annoying. Most of the time the pain involved could be just for a little while and then sometimes it seems like an eternity. There could be many causes for them and some have been mistaken for other disorders. Whatever the cause, they are painful and require attention.
