One of the most frustrating diseases to ever have to deal with is migraine headache as the condition has no cure and the symptoms from the syndrome can incapacitate you for several days. Though many symptoms can aggravate the victim the symptom that does the most debilitation is pain. The pain can be so agonizing that the victim will want to curl up into a corner and shut off life itself until the pain subsides. It is no wonder that migraine headaches are at the top of the list for reasons that people use to miss work because they were ill. Millions of Americans struggle each year with this incurable condition with no hope of relief, except through the use of a migraine treatment option which can greatly reduce the effects the symptoms have on them. Please remember though that treating migraine headaches is a process and will take time to gain control over the condition.
Sleep
Who knew that sleep was so valuable? Sleep plays a vital role in the onset of a migraine headache. Quality and adequate sleep time are deterrents of a migraine attack. If you have ever suffered from a severe migraine attack you know the amount of pain and limitation one can have on an individual and that sleep is difficult in the midst of a migraine attack. Taking the time to perfect snoozing habits will help reduce the effect migraines can have on yourself.
Weather
Personally, I suffer from weather triggered migraine headaches and right now, we want to briefly go over the role weather can play on migraines occurrences. Changes in the weather such as the ones mentioned below are thought to create a chemical reaction in the brain that sets the serotonin levels off balance bringing about a painful migraine headache. Chronic migraine sufferers often note an increase in migraine activity during weather and climate changes. Research on the weather and its direct influence on migraines is still under research, therefore it is suggested that migraine sufferers keep a headache journal noting which weather changes bring on migraine headaches and symptoms. Weather related migraines are often noticed when the following changes occur:
i. Barometric Changes
ii. Mostly Bright Sunshiny Days
iii. Rainy Weather
iv. Hot and Cold weather changes
v. Dry Air
vi. High Humid Air
Pain Reduction Without The Pills
- Reduce Stimuli – Over stimulation can often be a trigger, so doctors suggest avoiding direct exposure to bright light or at least wearing protective eyewear. Additionally, create an environment with limited noise, clutter and other distracters. These suggestions are not always possible at work, but do the best to make them happen. At the onset of symptoms it is best to remove all stimuli and lay down in a quiet, dark room.
- Lifestyle Changes – Maintaining consistent sleep schedules, regular exercise routines, and improving posture can all help reduce both the frequency and severity of migraines. Ensuring your body at least 7-8 hours of sleep, nightly, will sustain alertness and reduce possibilities of stress or fatigue. Certain foods, such as caffeine and aged cheese, can be triggers for migraines. Skipping meals or fasting is equally dangerous. Consistently maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet is imperative.
- Chiropractic Adjustments – Spinal realignment can be used to help alleviate the irritation of nerves in the head, neck and shoulders that cause inflammation and severe pressure in the head. A variety of manipulation styles are available to meet different levels of discomfort.
- Managing Personal Stress – Stress can breakdown bodies and wreck havoc on emotions. It is important to be aware of the stressors in your life and work to eliminate or at least find a better way to deal with them. Listening to calming music, journaling personal thoughts, even meditation can help redirect stressors and avoid tension build up within your body and mind. One suggestion is to take a five minute break every few hours to just clear mind and break down any building stressors.
- Relaxation Procedures – Acupuncture/acupressure and massage therapy can help release built up tension in your body and alleviate discomfort that could be a trigger to your nervous system. Acupuncture has been found to have long-lasting results and drastically reduce the intervals in which migraines are experienced. These treatments can be effective with as little as two sessions a month.
