Many people turn to all kinds of prescription medications, therapies, and medical treatments as the answer for their migraine treatment, but often supplemental therapies are overlooked or ignored because of some stigmatism that they have received over the years. So many studies have been completed in the area of supplemental therapies and people should really give them more of a chance, especially in the area of migraine treatment because there has been proof that shows they help to reduce the number of migraine occurrences overall as well as help with the lessening of symptoms of the migraine. Many different supplements are known to be helpful in the case of migraine treatment; however a few of the most commonly used supplements are Magnesium, Vitamin B-12, Coenzyme Q10, and 5-hydroxytryptophan.
Magnesium – Migraine sufferers usually have a lower level of magnesium when compared to those who do not. Studies have shown that the supplemental dosages of magnesium can help with the painful symptoms of migraines, especially those that might be triggered by the hormonal onset of a monthly cycle in women.
Vitamin B2 – Vitamin B2 is an excellent preventative migraine treatment because studies have shown that it can decrease the frequency and severity of migraines. Another benefit of vitamin B2 is that it’s safe to take while pregnant, and it does not cause toxicity. It can also be taken in in supplemental form such as a capsule or tablet. If taken in supplemental form it is best to take vitamin B2 with food as it is more easily absorbed into the stomach.
Coenzyme Q10 – Coenzyme Q10 is found inside the body’s cells and is key to proper function within the cell, it has been shown to have beneficial effects for patients that seek migraine treatment. Coenzyme Q10 has also proven especially advantageous when used in combination with Magnesium and Vitamin B2, and like other supplements besides being found naturally in foods can be taken by capsule or tablet form.
5-hydroxytryptophan – This particular supplement is an amino acid that is made by the body from tryptophan; it is then converted into serotonin which is an important brain chemical. Serotonin can reduce the intensity and frequency of migraine attacks by decreasing the constriction and dilation of blood vessels in the brain which can lead to migraines.
