Individuals who are suffering from migraines are often on the prowl for treatment options for prevention and elimination of their migraine attacks. Any individual can go to the local pharmacy and fill a prescription that was written by a doctor, but the problem with those prescriptions is that most of them have negative side effects that are associated with them. Another option in place of prescription medications is supplemental treatments. There are many different supplemental treatments for migraine attacks, but the most commonly used are as follows:
- Magnesium – Migraine sufferers usually have a lower level of magnesium when compared to those who do not have migraines. Studies have shown that the supplemental dosages of magnesium can help with the painful symptoms of migraines, especially those that might be triggered by the hormonal onset of a monthly cycle in women, because magnesium is protective to the vascular system.
- Vitamin B2 – is an excellent preventative supplemental treatment because studies have shown that it can both decrease the frequency and severity of a migraine for some patients. Another benefit of vitamin B2 is its safety in regards to pregnancy, and it does not cause toxicity. Vitamin B2 (or Riboflavin) can be found naturally in certain foods such as green leafy vegetables, liver, legumes, eggs, milk, cheese, almonds, wheat germ, dairy products, as well as fortified breads and cereals. It can also be taken in in supplemental form such as in a capsule or tablet. When taken in supplemental form it is best to take vitamin B2 with food as it is more easily absorbed into the stomach.
- Coenzyme Q10 – Coenzyme Q10 is found naturally inside the body’s cells and is the key to proper function within the cell, it has been shown to have beneficial effects for migraine sufferers. Coenzyme Q10 is found naturally in dietary sources such as meat and fish, Vegetable oils, and parsley. Coenzyme Q10 has also proven especially favorable as a supplemental treatment when used in combination with Magnesium and Vitamin B2, and like other supplements besides being found naturally in foods can be taken by capsule or tablet form.
- 5-hydroxytryptophan – This particular supplemental treatment for migraine is an amino acid that is made by the body from tryptophan; it is then converted into serotonin which is an important brain chemical. Serotonin works as a supplemental treatment because it can reduce the intensity and frequency of migraine attacks by decreasing the constriction and dilation of blood vessels in the brain which can lead to migraines.
