In a world where most of us are watching our weight we often go for those sugar-free or fat free options while running through the grocery store with little thought other than a smaller waistline. We might have even worked up a thirst during our shopping trip and feel pretty good about grabbing a 0 calorie diet cola to quench it. Most do not realize that sugar free does not mean home free exactly. If you suffer from migraines aspartame is a big no no!
Aspartame Issues
Aspartame is the key ingredient in most sugar free products. Some of the popular products include: low calorie yogurts, colas, cereals and desserts. The pain that occur during migraines is caused by blood vessels expanding and contracting. These fluctuating blood vessels can cause neurological symptoms like the migraine aura, numbness and tingling on one side of the face, slurred speech along with excruciating pain.
The effects that aspartame has on the body are just too risky for anyone but especially those who are prone to migraines. Aspartame affects the vascular system in such a way that it can cause high blood pressure, heart palpitations, and feelings of panic. Anyone who suffers from migraines must try to keep the vascular system at ease and prevent these high-low types of reactions from occurring to prevent migraines. Aspartame also has negative effects on the hormones and the neurotransmitters. Aspartame stresses the adrenal glands which can also cause high blood pressure, anxiety and nausea. Hormonal imbalances play a large part as to why people suffer migraines.
Healthy Alternatives To Aspartame
If you do suffer from migraines and need to rid yourself of aspartame consumption there are plenty of natural alternatives to reach for.
• Stevia is a naturally derived sweetener that can be found in liquid or powder form. Stevia has grown in popularity and can now be found in almost any supermarket. You can also find the liquid forms in most health food stores.
• Honey is twice as sweet as sugar and has tons of health benefits.
• Rice syrup is another natural alternative which happens to be 25% sweeter than sugar.
So if you are watching your weight, try using natural alternatives. Aspartame is most likely counterproductive to your efforts and wreaks havoc on the system. Using natural sweeteners that have healthy benefits can bring balance and reduce migraine pain and frequency.
