There are many migraine treatments available to the end consumer; they can range from time consuming acupuncture to simple prescription meds. One thing is certain: you must research each method and consult with your primary care physician to determine which migraine treatment is best for you. With a lack of information on the condition of migraine headaches, one can make a hasty, rash decision which may have grave consequences as some migraine treatments side effect on the side of death. Don’t freak out though; I will go through four of the five migraine treatment options and you can determine which option is truly right for your needs. You could also choose the fifth migraine treatment option as it is all-natural.
Acupuncture
This ancient Chinese remedy utilizes the manipulation of small needles to balance out the flow of qi or energy along certain channels of the body called meridians. When you contract an illness or condition, it is believed that the flow of qi has been blockaded. The flow must be restored in order to get better and balance to be regained.
Massage Therapy
Therapeutic massage is a great migraine treatment in that it eliminates one of the most common migraine triggers, back and neck tension. Using a professional and by avoiding large muscles groups (like Swedish or deep-tissue massages), you can relieve the tension by targeting and massaging the sub-occipital muscle group which runs from the base of the skull to the base of the spine.
Prescription Medications
The prescribed drugs of choice for most doctors are Triptans and Ergots which were not originally intended to be used in the treatment of migraine headaches. Designed for treating high blood pressure, Triptans and Ergots constrict the blood vessels from expanding, slowing the travel of the blood and minimizing the pressure. The problem lies when a normal BP patient takes these meds for migraines and has a heart attack due to the blood vessels constricting everywhere and not just in the brain where the migraine starts.
Chiropractic Adjustment
Many of my friends and even believe that chiropractors tend to target the source of a problem, whereas doctor just treat the symptoms. This seems like I am anti-physician but I am not; they have their place and for good reason. However, when treating migraines, an adjustment to either relieve tension or alleviate pressure in the spine can greatly reduce most symptoms and even the migraine itself, if treated regularly.
