There is nothing more exciting than a road trip! Silly highway games are one of my family’s favorite aspects of traveling long distance – which we are very familiar with. I was born and raised in Florida but chose to attend college in upstate New York and then finished out my college endeavor in Indiana. During my time away at college I would frequently drive home for special holidays of school breaks. Planning scenic stops, bathroom breaks, car fill-ups and where to stop for food were always things I planned and prepped for the trip back home.
Finally, the day would come and I and two or three of my college buddies would jump into my Pontiac Grand Prix and head south! Unbeknownst to me one of my traveling companions suffered from severe migraine headaches. I personally had never experienced a migraine attack before and was so not prepared for the next seventeen hours with a chronic migraine sufferer. Once we finally reached the Florida State line, I was jumping for joy inside knowing that in a few short hours my poor friend would be able to seek the dark quiet solace she so desperately needed.
When planning for an event such as a road trip, you can put loads of time and thought into every detail such as luggage and transportation but when it comes to a migraine, no one plans on dealing with one while they are supposed to be out enjoying life. For those who frequently experience migraine headaches planning for an attack is crucial to enjoying life. Taking into consideration what migraine triggers you may happen across while on your trip could help lessen the length of your migraine as well as the following:
- Vacations and or a road trip will mean disrupt in normal daily routine which could bring about the onset of a migraine.
- Sleeping patterns will be altered – sleep interruptions or the lack of sleep can leave one vulnerable to a migraine.
- Fasting – one of the perks of vacation is all the eating out one gets to do, however when traveling the goal is to reach one’s destination therefore causing long periods to go by without stopping to eat – this could induce a migraine headache.
- Weather – climate plays a huge role in bringing about migraine symptoms.
Do not make the mistake of forgetting to plan for interruptions such as migraines when traveling. Take the added time to stock up on everything you will need to treat your migraine yet still enjoy your trip.
