Among the various nutritional supplements that have been studied as possible preventative treatments for migraines, Coenzyme Q10 has shown impressive results in its ability to reduce migraine frequency. Coenzyme Q10, or COQ10, is naturally produced by your body and is found in nearly every cell within the body.
CoQ10’s main role is to produce energy through the production of ATP. This chemical molecule transmits energy between cells and is responsible for ninety-five percent of the energy produced within the body.
Apart from its role as a producer of energy on the cellular level, CoQ10 has shown promising results in its ability to reduce migraine frequency. In one clinical study by the Jefferson Headache Center at Thomas Jefferson University, 62% of patients reported a 50% reduction in migraine frequency after taking 150 mg of CoQ10 for a three-month period. The average frequency of migraine attacks among patients going into the study was 7.34 per month. This was reduced to 2.95 after three months of treatment.
Another study conducted by the Headache and Pain Unit at University Hospital Zurich reported similar results. It also reported significant reduction in days with nausea, a common symptom of many migraine sufferers.
The Women’s Headache Center at the University of Turin in Italy reports, “Among vitamins and other supplements, riboflavin and coenzyme Q10 significantly decreased the frequency of migraine attacks.” Though more research is required to determine how this enzyme attacks migraines, the early evidence shows a clear pattern of significantly reducing their frequency.
Although the body produces CoQ10 naturally, its production levels decline with age. A variety of factors such as diabetes, genetic disorders, prescription medications and more can reduce CoQ10 levels in the body. In order to maintain proper levels and to use CoQ10 as a treatment for migraines, it is recommended that you take COQ10 supplements. We recommend a daily dosage of between 150-175mg.
