For decades migraine sufferers have been forced to live with their intense pain with little hope for any migraine relief. In the last few decades as modern day advances have been made in regards to medical improvements and advancements more hope for migraine sufferers has been found. Medical professionals within the last few decades started prescribing medications such as anti-depressants, blood pressure pills and anti-seizure medications to help their migraine sufferers find some type of relief while medical researchers still looked for a migraine cure.
Though medications prescribed were not designed or developed with migraine sufferers in mind the prescribing of them seemed to have some positive effect so the migraine medication craze began. It did not take long for migraine sufferers to start asking to be prescribed some type of migraine medication even if the relief was not complete something was better than nothing. Now through further modern day technology and discoveries medical professionals have been able to add to their migraine medication list a treatment known as triptans.
Triptans
Triptans are a collection of tryptamine-based drugs. Tryptamine is a monoamine alkaloid that can be found in certain vegetation such as plants, fungi and animals. Triptans are used as a tool to prevent migraines from being successful in completely immobilizing an individual. Triptans consist of:
- Sumatriptan (Imitrex, Imigran, Cinie, Illument, Migriptan)
- Rizatriptan (Maxalt),
- Naratriptan (Amerge, Naramig)
- Zolmitriptan (Zomig)
- Eletriptan (Relpax)
- Elmotriptan (Axert, Almogran)
- Frovatriptan (Frova, Migard, Frovamig)
- Avitriptan
Because of triptans unique ability to attach to the serotonin receptors on the blood vessels and the surrounding nerves, they can help reduce and in some cases completely stop migraine headaches from occurring.
Side Effect
Though triptans might work to prevent migraines for some migraine patients they are not a guarantee and they come with several side effects. Medical professionals do not like to prescribe triptans unless every other treatment has been attempted with little to no success. The side effects connected with the use of triptans are very dangerous the most common side effects associated with triptans are but not limited to:
- Drowsiness
- Facial Reddening
- Fatigue
- Tightening In The Chest
- Tightening In The Throat
