Knowing is half the battle and when it comes to migraine headaches, knowing the causes of a migraine attack is the battle. Migraine headaches plague some twenty million men and women each year and yet there is no known cure for migraine headaches and very little knowledge is known about migraine causes as well. So what is a chronic migraine sufferer supposed to do? Most chronic migraine sufferers live out their life without seeking any form of migraine treatment, therefore they are left to live in their migraine misery.
The pain that is associated with a migraine stems from the way a migraine develops. A migraine is unlike your normal everyday headache, migraines create a chemical and neurological upset. When a migraine develops, the chemicals in the brain change causing pain and relentless side- effects such as:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Confusion
- Blurred Vision
- Throbbing Head Pain
- Pounding Head Pain
Migraine symptoms and side effects cause a debilitation that often leads to a lack of productivity at home and work. With so many migraine sufferers worldwide, one would think that there would be more insight as to what causes them.
Theory
Medical researchers and professionals in the medical world have spent hours upon hours studying migraine and their possible causes and risk factors and the information on hand is limited yet helpful. There are several things that are thought to be the underlying cause of migraines such as low levels of magnesium in the body as well as the effect a migraine trigger can have on the body. What are migraine triggers? Migraine triggers are factors that play a role in setting the stage for a migraine to break through.
Migraine triggers are either physiological or environmental. Migraine triggers are very difficult to avoid thus making it impossible to rid oneself by avoidance alone. Migraine Triggers would include:
- Weather – change in Barometric Temp
- Stress
- Sleep – poor sleep, too little, too much and or interrupted
- Hormones – estrogen fluctuation
- Smells – perfume, smoke
- Foods- chocolate, caffeine and aged cheese
- Lights – bright, flashing or strobe
Once a trigger has been encountered, it is important that a migraine treatment be implemented as soon as possible to limit the duration and intensity of the migraine.
