For those who are told they have a condition like migraines, planning ahead can be very helpful, especially when appointment have to do with work and cannot easily be rescheduled. The client needs to understand that the appointment could suddenly change due to an episode with a migraine. For most migraine sufferers, many other changes also need to take place in order for a lifestyle conducive to migraine treatment and therapy; this will readily help the sufferer cope without further harm coming to them other than the normal flare up of the condition. Scheduling events, other than work, can also aid in the prophylaxis of the migraine condition; it helps you plan your day so that you can avoid triggers and other rough situations which could increase your migraine symptoms. Consult with your primary care physician to determine if any other lifestyle changes need to take place in order to help your endure your condition.
Not Your Kinda Change
Changes in the weather such as the ones mentioned below are thought to create a chemical reaction in the brain that sets the serotonin levels off balance bringing about a painful migraine headache. Chronic migraine sufferers often note an increase in migraine activity during weather and climate changes. Research on the weather and its direct influence on migraines is still under research, therefore it is suggested that migraine sufferers keep a headache journal noting which weather changes bring on migraine headaches and symptoms. Weather related migraines are often noticed when the following changes occur:
- Mostly Bright Sunshiny Days
- High Humid Air
- Barometric Changes
- Windy weather can trigger migraines due to the wind changing the pressure in the ears
- Hot and Cold weather changes
- Rainy Weather
- Dry Air
Understanding Your Changing Risk Factors
So to help you in minimizing the head pain that may be there, I am going to list several risk factors for migraine headaches. If you check more than two risk factors off, then you might want to be proactive and speak with your primary care physician as soon as possible.
i. Medical Concerns – Men and women that have a history of medical concerns such as depression, anxiety, stroke, epilepsy and high blood pressure are more susceptible to migraines than people who have not suffered with any of the listed medical concerns.
ii. Family Genetics – A rather large statistic says that those individuals that come from a family history of migraine sufferers will most likely be at risk of suffering from chronic migraines as well.
iii. Age – Your age can be a risk factor; you are still in an age group where migraine headaches can be common occurrences, if you are between the ages of 15 and 55. During childhood, migraines are less frequent to not nonexistent. Research has shown that children who suffer from migraines typically will grow out of them as they age, unless other factors are involved. So be sure to know what factor increase the chances of having migraine so your child won’t have to suffer as you do.
Ergots Constrict The Problem
Most of the time, the herbal supplements will work but many doctor don’t recommend the supplement approach as there is less research done on them versus prescription meds. The top two prescription meds prescribed by most physicians are Triptans and Ergots. Triptans are a classification of prescription medications aimed to help in relieving migraine headaches. In particular Triptans are geared towards relieving the pressure associated with migraines. The two main functions of Triptans are to constrict blood vessels, and upset the process which leads to the migraine by disturbing the sequence of chemicals that would inflict pain or irritation to the nerve in the first place. The benefits of Triptans are that when used correctly they will reduce the amount of pain during a migraine. Triptans should be given early on during a migraine attack, as the sooner it’s taken the better it will work. However there is a negative side to Triptans. While being useful as a migraine treatment there are many side effects such as Drowsiness, Facial Reddening, Fatigue, Tightening in the Chest, Tightening in the Throat, and Dizziness. Because Triptans work to narrow the blood vessels in order to relieve migraine pain, it can be dangerous because the narrowing of blood vessels can take place in other parts of the body such as in the arteries of the heart. For obvious reason, Triptans are much more dangerous to take for someone who has any form of coronary narrowing. So while Triptans do help to eliminate the pain from migraine one must ask if there are other options to relieve this pain that don’t carry quite as many risks and side effects.
