There are many prescription medications used for both prevention and for migraine treatment. The most common form of preventative migraine treatment is the use of prophylactic medications. Prophylactic medication it is not as effective when taken once a migraine has already developed, but it can be somewhat helpful in reducing the reoccurrences of migraine headaches. Prescription medication, while often necessary, should be one of the last treatments tried in helping to relieve migraine symptoms. Family history and genetic factors play a large role in those suffering from migraines. Studies have shown up to 90 percent of people with migraines have a family history of them and says that those individuals that come from a family history of migraine sufferers will most likely be at risk of suffering from chronic migraines as well. Age is another risk factor. During childhood, migraines are less frequent but not nonexistent. Research has shown that most individuals will experience their first migraine during adolescence, by age 40; most people who will suffer from migraines will have had their first attack.
Gender is yet another risk factor. It is a commonly known fact that more migraine suffers tend to be female. Hormonal changes seem to play a very large role in the case of migraines. During childhood or adolescents, the frequencies of migraines between sexes were not that different but a drastic increase in migraine headaches in females become apparent as they neared puberty. Other medical issues can also be a precursor to a person suffering from migraine attacks. Individuals who are have medical issues such as depression, anxiety, stroke, epilepsy and high blood pressure are more susceptible to migraines than people who have not suffered with any of the listed medical concerns.
Holistic Treatments
A more natural approach to migraine treatment is possible with the use of alternative therapies such as acupuncture, biofeedback, chiropractic care, massage therapy. Natural therapies are worth looking into because of the health benefits and proven relief of symptoms associated with migraine.
While many different conventional prescription medications can be found for migraine treatment, supplements should also be considered. Many different supplements are shown to be helpful in the case of migraine treatment. A few of the most commonly used supplements are Magnesium, Vitamin B-2, Coenzyme Q10, Melatonin, and 5-hydroxytryptophan.
