Migraine headaches are a chronic condition that affects more than twenty eight million men and women. This staggering statistic is one that most people find hard to believe because migraine when compared with other chronic conditions such as diabetes or neuropathy seems trivial and not as severe. A migraine headache just like any other chronic condition is severe and does have an effect on those suffering with them. Those who are not familiar with migraine headaches may make the uneducated comments and observations that migraines and headaches are the same thing.
Headaches and migraines are nothing at all alike. A headache is pitiful compared to the power a migraine can hold over an individual. Migraines can last up to three days and cause serious complications in a person’s personal, professional and even physical life. The reason that a migraine has such power over an individual has to do with the way a migraine develops. A migraine is considered to be a neurological condition because of the chemical changes it causes in the brain. A migraine develops when the blood vessels in the brain begin to enlarge. The enlarging of the blood vessels in the brain causes the release of a harmful chemical. The chemical that has been released begins to attack the brains arteries thus causing a series of miserable and debilitating symptoms.
Symptoms and Treatment
Migraine symptoms may start out somewhat mild but in a matter of hours the mild moves to moderate that then moves to severe and the migraine sufferer find him or herself flat on their back. Migraine symptoms and pain only worsen over time, the following are just a few of the miserable symptoms that chronic migraine sufferers are forced to endure on a regular sometimes monthly basis.
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Blurred Vision
- Diarrhea
- Throbbing / pounding head pain
Migraine treatment is the only effective way a person can reduce migraine pain while still enjoying life. Migraine treatment comes in many forms so it is imperative that a migraine sufferer speak with his or her doctor before using anything he or she thinks is safe.
