In America today, nearly 45 million people suffer from chronic headaches. Of those 45 million, only 28 million actually suffer from a debilitating type of chronic headache known as migraines. Pulsating pains around the temples often lead to sensitivities to sounds, light and even smells. Treatment from a physician is needed to properly diagnose migraine headaches and to begin a proper treatment plan. Treatment options for migraines can take many different forms: over-the-counter medication, prescription medication, alternative therapies, and even vitamins. That’s right, certain vitamins and minerals could help relieve migraine aches and pains, if you prefer a natural or homeopathic treatment program.
Vitamin Options
Twenty percent of all migraines sufferers developed the condition as a result of genetics. One in five people dealing with migraines have an enzyme that does not work properly and results in migraine episodes. Researchers in Australia are working diligently to find a remedy for this enzyme defect in an effort to ease migraine pain for the 20% of genetic sufferers. These researchers have found that taking B-complex vitamins and folate supplements drastically reduces the frequency and severity of migraine attacks. They are currently working on medical trials of this vitamin combination for migraines with women between the ages of 18 and 35, as women are three times more likely to suffer from migraines than men.
Coenzyme Q-10 is another supplement that has shown effective results in treating migraine symptoms. CoQ-10 is a naturally produce vitamin found in the heart, kidney, liver and pancreas. It can also be found in small amounts when eating meat and seafood. CoQ-10 is used to improve the immune system in people suffering from various conditions and thought to lengthen life span. The recommended dosage is 150 mg daily. CoQ-10 is a vitamin-like compound that is responsible for the production of energy inside of the cells in the body. Some studies have shown that migraines may be caused, at least partly, by an energy issue that could be supported through the use of Q10 supplements. One study found the women taking CoQ-10 at the recommended dosage for three months showed tremendous improvement in migraine symptoms over time.
