ABOUT MIGRAINES
Migraines are experienced by millions of people all over the world. They can start as early as 18 months but most likely begin at around the age of 12. They occur more in women than in men. These headaches are very painful and can center itself anywhere in the head. The pain can be so bad that you might feel your head is about to explode. Often an aura will precede the headache with the appearance of blind spots or squiggly lines, blurred or double vision, or flashing lights, which all disappear with the onset of the migraine. This chronic neurological condition can last a lifetime especially to those individuals who start getting them in childhood.
Migraines are disruptive in a person’s life and can be very debilitating. Sleeplessness, anxiety, fatigue, depression, vision or cognitive problems also accompany the pain resulting in the disabling of that person. The loss of productivity and a normal way of life for people with migraine headaches are astounding. It is estimated that the cost of $20 billion in the United States alone, per year, is credited to missed work, medications used and doctor visits. Besides being the most disabling medical condition on earth, the seriousness of it also ranks up there with high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack and even diabetes. Unfortunately, there is no cure.
WHAT’S BEING DONE ABOUT MIGRAINES?
Migraines are very complex in nature and sometimes involve other medical conditions as well, thus making the disease very complex to study and find out just what causes a migraine and why so many people suffer this chronic disorder. New developments in the field of migraine research have been notably slowed down due to the lack of funding. Actually, diabetes and asthma receive more funding for their research than do the top researchers of migraine, consequently making it very difficult to focus on studying migraine headaches.
Because this disorder is so misunderstood and often misdiagnosed, the treatments are often inadequate. These include medications to reduce the frequency of headaches or physical therapies.
New studies in the field of genetic research also discovered certain neurological abnormalities linked to one of the causes of migraines. More than one gene may be responsible for migraines and without research done in genetics we may never know. It’s very important that research about migraines be continued.
We are on the brink of substantial breakthroughs in migraine research and it must go on to improve our understanding of migraines and help develop new and effective ways of treatment. Unfortunately the lack of funding has slowed the rate of progress in this area.
