What is a migraine headache? Migraine headaches are a common disorder distressing over 13 % of the population in North America alone. Recent studies conducted by the National Headache Foundation found that a shocking 28 million Americans suffer from migraine pain. Untreated migraines can cause loss of time from work and school, as well as significantly reducing the quality of life for those who suffer from them. Over half of migraine sufferers reported a 50% decrease in work or school efficiency while 39% reported pain so severe that bed rest was required; with some people it lasted for days at a time. Migraine headaches are a biological disease. Some of the characteristics include but are not limited to throbbing head pain, usually located on one side of the head; nausea, hypersensitivity to light, vomiting, and dizziness are often indicators that accompanied an attack. Headaches differ in severity from mild, fleeting ones to those that last for as many as three hours to even up to three days and virtually incapacitate the victim. The most severe types of headaches are tension headaches and migraine headaches. The second are described as vascular in that they are revealed by changes in the blood vessels within the brain. Migraines can be triggered by multiple things which include but are not limited to food, stress, hormones and other causes as suggested above. The triggers lead to chemical alterations within the brain.
Migraine headaches occur because of a disorder in the central nervous system. They can cause severe pain, sensitivity to light, vision disturbances, nausea and sensitivity to noise. Some people are able to function through a migraine, but many migraine casualties find the pain debilitating.
A migraine is a severe, recurrent headache that is usually characterized by intense throbbing pain and can be accompanied by many other symptoms. There are several types of migraines. Treatment for migraines usually focuses on controlling symptoms, avoiding triggers and using preventative drugs. Treatment, however, is often not entirely successful, and many migraine subjects fight lifelong battles with severe headaches. Alternative migraine treatments, such as the herbal remedy feverfew, are used by many migraine sufferers seeking preventative measures. Thankfully there are many migraine treatments available and with how fast technology is advancing I am sure there will be many, many more in the near future.
