Dealing with a migraine attack is excruciatingly painful. Depending on the type of migraine, the symptoms that accompany them, they can leave you flat on your back searching for relief. While several different treatment options are available for migraines, many prefer not to pop-pills in order to reduce their pain. Is it possible to manipulate your migraine? Through the use of manual manipulation, provided by a licensed chiropractor, your migraine pain management could become pill-free.
How Does It Work
Migraines are reoccurring headaches accompanied by debilitating symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, blurry vision, and sensitivity to light and sound. Several studies have shown that spinal manipulation will help tremendously in the treatment of migraines. One study documented that 22% of participants report more than a 90% reduction in attacks, while 46% reported a significant reduction in the intensity of the headaches.
While the exact cause of migraines is not known, an imbalance of the chemicals in the brain is believed to irritate and inflame nerves along the spinal cord and brain. This pressure would be the cause of the intense pressure and pain during a migraine attack. Triggers, such as caffeine, stress, and even hormones can intensify symptoms accompanying each episode. Chiropractors believe the true origin of a migraine is the spine. Often times, a misalignment of the spine can irritate the nerves traveling the length of the spinal cord to the brain and create pressure at the base of the skull. This misalignment can leave a person prone to chemical imbalances in the brain. A chiropractor specializes in the realignment of the vertebrae. Once vertebrae are returned to their proper location, the pressure around the inflamed nerves in reduced, in turn relieving the pain and discomfort associated with the migraine.
Chiropractor’s offer several different options for pain relief. Some utilize traditional manual manipulation, using their hands and own body as the acting force for spinal realignment. The Activator technique, involves the use of a hand-held spring-loaded device that provides a pulse directly to the vertebrae. The idea with the Activator technique is that enough force is provided to adjust the vertebrae, but not cause any type of injury. Should you experience any pain or discomfort during or after an adjustment, speak with your chiropractor about available options to reduce stress to body during treatment.
