So there has been a lot of hype lately about migraine treatments and which one can be the best for you. Some are physiologically intrusive and can be rather evasive such as acupuncture or massage therapy. Others are more like oral medications such as prescribed meds or natural supplements. Whichever you choose, you should do the research so that the best decision is made. Sometimes consulting with your primary care physician can help you in that endeavor. In this article, we will go over the process in each stage of a migraine attack and how certain natural supplement options can be helpful to your body.
Stages Of The Migraine Process
There are four unique stages of the migraine process and not everyone experiences each stage the same or even at all.
- Prodrome – This is the first stage and almost 40% of the sufferers go through this stage. Prodrome is a subtle stage and gives warning sign of an impending migraine attack. During this stage, the Aura and the Headache stage, the blood vessels in the brain will be expanding and enlarging causing a chemical to be released into the brain. Symptoms, you can expect from the prodrome stage, might include: odd food cravings, fatigue, hot ears, constipation, dizziness, even loss of some motor function. Riboflavin is a key component to building and maintaining energy in the body which can combat fatigue.
- Aura – This the rarest stage experienced by most migraine sufferers. It attacks the vision and can cause the sufferer to have zigzag vision, blurred vision, extreme vertigo, temporary blindness in one eye, loss of cognitive reasoning and even hallucinations. Ginkgo Biloba is a great mental focusing herb; it also can work as an anti-vertigo agent.
- Headache – The pain obviously is intense and can not be ignored no matter how hard you try. This pain is caused by two imbalanced sources: the chemical released attacking the arteries in the brain and the inflamed trigeminal nerve. There are two important herbs / compounds that help with ease some of the pain: Feverfew and Butterbur; both are great in taking down inflammation and easing head pain.
- Postdrome – Fatigue and nausea are both present in this final stage of the migraine; you feel somewhat like you were out drinking and partying all night. But the blood vessels begin to subside their expanding and the migraine that has plagued you for three day or more will disappear…until the next time. Ginger root extract will help ease the “hung-over” feeling in the stage and give you some relief.
