It’s not like migraines are something new, in fact migraines have been around for decades and decades, and before the dawn of modern medicine individuals looked to nature to be the source of healing in migraine treatment. Mother Nature has given us these supplements and techniques to more holistically treat the body for relief from the pain associated with migraine attacks, and in fact even in spite of modern medicine these more natural approaches to migraine treatment have actually been proven highly beneficial in multiple clinical studies and trials. Here are some of the supplements that many migraine sufferers find successful:
• Coenzyme Q10 – Coenzyme Q10 is a key to proper function within the cell and it has been shown to have beneficial effects for patients that seek migraine treatment.
• Vitamin B2 – Vitamin B2 is an excellent preventative migraine treatment because studies have shown that it can decrease the frequency and severity of a migraine.
• Magnesium Citrate – Individuals who suffer from migraines usually have lower levels of magnesium when compared to those who do not. Studies have shown that magnesium can help with the painful symptoms of migraines, especially those that might be triggered by the hormonal onset of a monthly cycle in women..
• 5-Hydroxytryptophan – This particular supplement is an amino acid that is made by the body from tryptophan; it is then converted into serotonin which is a very important brain chemical. Serotonin has shown that it can reduce the intensity and frequency of migraine attacks by decreasing the constriction and dilation of blood vessels in the brain which can often lead to migraines.
Follow The Signs
As you are trying to preempt the migraine from happening with a treatment option, you need also to be cautious of the warning signs that notify you that a migraine is coming. Even though utilizing supplements is helpful, it is not always fool proof. The Prodrome stage is the first stage of a migraine attack. Symptoms that occur during the prodrome stage will usually appear one to two days before the actual migraine attack takes place and they warn the victim of the impending migraine. Symptoms which most commonly appear in the prodrome phase include constipation, depression, diarrhea, food cravings (especially those that are high in sugar or salt), hyperactivity, irritability, as well as neck stiffness. Although some migraine sufferers may experience the opposite and have symptoms such as being giddy, happy, and full of energy during the prodrome stage.
Different Than Herbs
Most of the time, the herbal supplements will work but many doctor don’t recommend the supplement approach as there is less research done on them versus prescription meds. The top two prescription meds prescribed by most physicians are Triptans and Ergots. Triptans are a classification of prescription medications aimed to help in relieving migraine headaches. In particular Triptans are geared towards relieving the pressure associated with migraines. The two main functions of Triptans are to constrict blood vessels, and upset the process which leads to the migraine by disturbing the sequence of chemicals that would inflict pain or irritation to the nerve in the first place. In general Triptans are usually only prescribed to migraine sufferers with moderate to severe migraine pain who have tried other forms of migraine treatment that did not work. The benefits of Triptans are that when used correctly they will reduce the amount of pain during a migraine. Triptans should be given early on during a migraine attack, as the sooner it’s taken the better it will work. However there is a negative side to Triptans. While being useful as a migraine treatment there are many side effects such as Drowsiness, Facial Reddening, Fatigue, Tightening in the Chest, Tightening in the Throat, and Dizziness. Because Triptans work to narrow the blood vessels in order to relieve migraine pain, it can be dangerous because the narrowing of blood vessels can take place in other parts of the body such as in the arteries of the heart. For obvious reason, Triptans are much more dangerous to take for someone who has any form of coronary narrowing. So while Triptans do help to eliminate the pain from migraine one must ask if there are other options to relieve this pain that don’t carry quite as many risks and side effects.
