Migraine pain is misunderstood by many people who do not deal with them, but unfortunately migraines are misunderstood even by the individuals who suffer from them on a regular basis. Migraine pain is much more than just a run of the mill headache where a few aspirin can be taken and the person goes on with their normal day. No, migraine pain is severe, often comes with other painful symptoms such as blurred vision, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, and even sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines can last anywhere from four to seventy two hours and even once the migraine pain has subsided individuals often complain of feeling washed out or having a “hung over” feeling for days after an attack. This is why knowing the facts behind migraine pain are so critical. If individuals can understand what may cause or bring on their attacks then and only then can the road to finding relief begin.
Risk Factors
Certain individuals whether they like it or not inherently possess certain risk factors to having migraine pain. Factors such as family history, age, gender or other possible medical issues all play a role. Family history and genetics affect migraine pain because studies have shown that up to 90 percent of individuals who suffer from migraine pain have a history of migraines. Gender is a more commonly known risk factor as studies show that more Females than Males tend to suffer from migraine pain. Hormonal factors also play a role.
Warning Signs
Knowledge is the key to most things, and migraine pain isn’t any different. In order for prevention or elimination of migraine pain to take place each individual who suffers from them must know their own personal warning signs in order to cut the migraine attack off at the pass. Some of the most common warning signs are
- Fatigue
- Depression
- Obsessive Yawning
- Food Cravings – particularly those high in sugar or salt.
- Mood Changes
- Irritability
- Drowsiness
Each person will differ with what warning signs will take place before a migraine but if the individual is able to take notice of these certain set of warning signs that are common among those with migraine pain then hopefully they can begin to realize when an attack will take place and be able to stop it before it starts.
Triggers
Just as the warning signs differ amongst those who suffer from migraine pain so do the triggers. However, most often triggers will begin with a specific source (or combination of several sources) such as physical, environmental, or physiological causes. Some of the main triggers associated with migraine pain are Sleep (or lack thereof), Hormonal Changes, Lighting, Certain Foods, Caffeine, as well as Stress.
