Headaches, migraines, and vascular headaches – those three words together can mean a certain hell on earth for a person who experiences them on any basis. However, the good news is that there is hope. Hope that treating migraines and the headaches associated with them is possible, and not only possible, but possible without the use of prescription medication. - Acupuncture – In the case of treating migraines acupuncture, which is an ancient Chinese practice that involves the insertion of very fine needles into certain points of the body, can be very effective. Studies have shown that in the case of tension and migraine headaches, manipulative therapy can be as effective as preventative medications in helping to keep off the onset of migraines.
- Massage – Massage Therapy can be a very useful in treating migraines, especially if the headaches and migraines are triggered by stress or tension. A massage therapist is trained in working the muscles around the head, neck, shoulders, and back in order to increase blood flow in those areas and help relieve muscle tension.
Supplemental Therapies
Supplements for treating migraines are not only possible, but has in fact been proven successful and beneficial to the migraine sufferer. Studies have shown that supplements are effective in the prevention of migraine and vascular headaches as well as in the lessening of the symptoms if an attack should break through. A few of the most commonly used supplements for treating migraines are:
- Magnesium – Studies have shown that the supplemental dosages of magnesium can help with the painful symptoms of migraines.
- Vitamin B2 – Known as an excellent preventative for treating migraines because studies have shown that it can decrease the frequency and severity of a migraine for some patients.
- Coenzyme Q10 – Found inside the body’s cells and known as the key to proper function within the cell, it has been shown to have beneficial effects for patients that seek an alternative to treating migraines.
- 5-hydroxytryptophan – This particular supplement is an amino acid that is made by the body from tryptophan; it is then converted into serotonin which is an important brain chemical. Serotonin can reduce the intensity and frequency of migraine attacks by decreasing the constriction and dilation of blood vessels in the brain which can lead to migraines and/or vascular headaches.
