The headache stage is the most common phase known by most people because of the intense pain to the head that is experienced here. The pain is described as throbbing unilateral pain which means it is typically felt on one side of the brain and not both sides. The headache stage can last up to three days and brings with it miserable symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, cognitive confusion and sensitivity to light and sound. The only things you want to do during this stage, since there is no pain killer strong enough to stop the tumult, is crawl into a corner and wait out the storm. Here are a few herbs to aid you in the stage.
Feverfew is a very effective herbal supplement for migraine treatment as it does not only stop fevers but also it can be an effective pain reliever and anti-inflammatory. Butterbur root is found typically in marsh areas or wetland spots of the world and can be helpful to this stage of the migraine as a headache reliever as well as another anti-inflammatory medicinal herb. 5-HTP or 5-hydroxytryptophan is an amino acid that is made by the body from tryptophan; it is then converted into serotonin which is an important brain chemical. Serotonin can reduce the intensity and frequency of migraine attacks by decreasing the constriction and dilation of blood vessels in the brain which can lead to migraines.
Prescription Medication
Migraine treatment has come a long way in the last decade. The discovery of triptans has helped lessen the severity of a migraine attack as well as shorten the duration of a migraine, plus triptans are a preventative treatment that has the ability to constrict or narrow the arteries to the brain preventing them from expanding and causing migraines. This method has proven to be a successful one for those whose doctors will prescribe it yet the downside to using a treatment such as triptans is the side effects associated with them. Triptans though effective can be harmful; caution is needed as well as research in order to determine if you are a safe candidate for this particular migraine treatment. They can cause liver problems, kidney issues, stroke, stress, suicidal thoughts and even heart attacks. USE WITH CAUTION!
