Peace is hard to come by many times in life. For example: peace rarely finds its way into the home of a mom who recently had a child, except for nap time…the best time of the day! Well, for migraine patients as well, there is little peace and relief from the chronic migraine attacks that they experience. However, if you understand the cause of a migraine and different migraine treatments that can help, you will be well on your way to destroying the migraine cycle in your life.
Triggers
There is not much truly known about migraines but we do believe they are triggered by environmental or physiological phenomena. We call them triggers. These triggers can pop up any time and can be very annoying in that once you have encountered one, the process will begin. Some of the environmental triggers could include: weather changes, humidity, dry air, bright light, loud noises, smells like body odor or cigarette smoke and even outside stress factors. Some of the physiological trigger could include: caffeine, foods, alcohol, fatigue, emotional stress, depression, hunger and even neck / back tension. If you can avoid these migraine triggers, more power to you but for the rest of us who have responsibilities, the proposition of avoidance is vastly more difficult.
Migraine Treatments
There are a number of migraine treatments; while all of them offer relief from migraine pain and other symptoms, some bring along with them rough side effects. Consult with your primary care physician to determine the best migraine treatment option for you. Here is one of your choices:
- Massage Therapy – As I mentioned earlier, neck and back tension can be a common trigger; therefore, to massage the tension of the area can be a relief in itself and from the impending migraine. The sub-occipital muscle group will be the target and only go to a professional therapist. Don’t receive a Swedish or deep-tissue massage as this will only increase your migraine pain and even cause a migraine from the start.
- Acupuncture – If you don’t like needles, then acupuncture is not for you. This is because Chinese medicine believes that is you manipulate the skin with a needle along the energy flowing meridian channels of the body, you can alleviate most illness.
