When trying to handle the problem of chronic migraine headaches, you have to know how the migraine works and how each stage of the migraine process brings different symptoms and each person experiences each stage differently. But before we discuss what happens in each stage, you need to know the overall view of the migraine system of events. Migraines are caused by triggers. Once a trigger is experienced by the sufferer, blood vessels in the brain will begin to expand and enlarge. As they expand and swell, a chemical will be released by them and will cause immense pain to the individual by attacking the arteries in the brain and inflaming the trigeminal nerve. This pain and other symptoms will not cease until the blood vessels that caused this return to their normal viscosity.
Prodrome Stage
This is obviously the first stage of a migraine and it contains many symptoms that can be subtle by appearing as something else. You could experience: fatigue, diarrhea, dizziness, hot ears, irritability, depression, mood changes, food cravings like chocolate, constipation and even excessive sleepiness or more frequent urination. This stage usually takes place hours but could take place days before the migraine headache stage. Riboflavin will help build energy to fight off fatigue in this stage.
Aura Stage
This next stage is experienced by fewest number of migraine sufferers. It attacks the eyes and can give you: blurred vision, black spots, zigzag vision, temporary blindness in one eye, vertigo and hallucinations. Ginkgo Biloba is a natural herb which has the medicinal properties to be an anti-vertigo agent and stops the dizziness. It will also help with mental focus, clarity and concentration.
Headache Stage
Yep, you guessed it….PAIN. Unbearable, overwhelming, incurable pain plagues your body and specifically, you head with unilateral pain. There are two herbal supplements that will help with the pain and inflammation: Butterbur (a plant found in wetland environments) and feverfew (a daisy-like plant).
Postdrome Stage
In this final stage, the blood vessels are returning to normal and the pain is subsiding; yet there are still a number of symptoms you have to endure here such as: fatigue, vomiting, nausea, mood swings and even weakness in muscles and joints as if you had just ran a marathon. Ginger root could help aid in calming the gastrointestinal issues.
