How many people do you think try to take the easy way out and make life the most simple and convenient as possible? Well, it is a fact of modern life that people do try to take the path of least resistance and the dame goes for the way they handle chronic condition like migraine headaches. Now in the world of migraines, the past that is most traveled also happens to be the most convenient; it is the trail of prescription drugs. I am not against medication or the use of prescriptions as a therapeutic way to calm migraine headaches. What concerns me is that most every medication prescribe your physician was never designed to treat migraine but other conditions like high blood pressure or depression. Drugs, like Triptans or Ergots, can cause more harm than good if not carefully watched and only used in the case of an emergency. Now, instead of a prescribed drug, some people will use an OTC remedy. So check out the info below and see if OTC meds are a good option for migraine treatment.
Acetaminophen
Acetaminophen is often taken to help reduce mild pain such as: headaches, backaches, muscle aches toothaches and even mild cold symptoms. Acetaminophen is a pain reliever that relieves pain by changing the way the body feels pain by lowering the body temperature. Caution needs to be had when taking Acetaminophen, if taken in large doses over a long period of time damage can be caused to the liver and the kidneys.
Non–SteroidalAnti–InflammatoryDrugs (NSAID)
NSAID is typically used in conditions where chronic pain is felt. The purpose of NSAID is to relieve pain where inflammation has occurred. There are two forms of NSAID:
- Aspirin – examples of over the counter medication that have aspirin would be:
- Aleve
- Motrin
- Advil
- Non-aspirin – examples of non-aspirin over the counter pills would include:
- Ibuprofen
- Motrin IB
You might be wondering what the differences are between over the counter medicine that has aspirin vs. the medicine that is aspirin free. The difference is that medicine containing aspirin prevents the platelets from becoming blocked and forming blood clots. The downside to large doses of aspirin is that it increases bleeding but aspirin is often used to help prevent heart attacks and strokes. Though medicating with over-the-counter medicine would be the ideal way to treat a migraine, there are those cases that need something more drastic in their approach to treating a migraine headache. This approach could include prescription medication, migraine surgery or nerve muscle removal. Yet the best treatment plan is a natural one, so that is why I listed below a number of the vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements that aid in holistic migraine relief.
Gingko Biloba
Gingko Biloba is a powerful antioxidant made popular by its ability to help improve blood circulation in both the body and the brain. The reason that Gingko Biloba makes for such a great treatment options is its ability to hinder platelet aggregation. This powerful antioxidant possesses flavonoids and terpenoids which have been tested to show that they help dilate blood vessels which in return surges blood flow. After clinical studies were done on the use of Gingko Biloba as a treatment for migraines information was returned stating that migraine attacks were drastically reduced because of the use of Gingko Biloba.
Feverfew is commonly associated with migraine relief due to its natural ability to obstructing the release of blood vessel dilating substances from the platelets that create migraine pain. Feverfew also prevents inflammatory substances from developing and increasing migraine pain levels. When researched, information revealed that feverfew can help reduce vomiting when undergoing a migraine as well as decrease the severity of the migraine attack.
Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 also referred to as CoQ10 is a vitamin like substance that helps generates energy in the body in the form of ATP.
White Willow Bark
White Willow Bark takes on the role of an anti-inflammatory as well as reduces pain caused by constraining prostaglandins.
One reason why triptans have been so successful in relieving migraine pain is their innate ability to attach to serotonin receptors helping aid in reducing the triggers that cause migraine pain. We learned that though this might be helpful in relieving temporary migraine pain it is not a cure nor is it 100% safe. Ginger on the other hand is 100% natural, safe and has the ability to attach to human serotonin receptors to help reduce migraine triggers that cause migraine pain. Ginger has also proven to help alleviate symptoms such as nausea and when combined with feverfew they are an effective tool against fighting off migraine symptoms.
