Migraine headaches have a way of causing parts of the body to become overly sensitive to sight and sound; emotions become heightened blotting out all rationality and replaces it with the need to run, run as far away from the light and noise as possible. When emotions such as these become heightened or active, it is often referred to as the fight or flight reaction. Migraine headaches are said to trigger the sympathetic nervous system, the sympathetic nervous system is what controls the body’s natural instinct in coping with stress and pain.
When we feel threatened, our bodies go on high alert, preparing it to ward off the adversity whatever or whoever that may be. Our bodies undergo physical and emotional changes that affect how we feel, respond and react. For example: when the body endures a prolonged period of pain, the sympathetic nerves go on high alert triggering the onset of symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Once the sympathetic system is on guard, other systems in the body begin to malfunction such as the body’s ability to digest food correctly – it delays the contents in the stomach from being emptied into the small intestines, making it difficult for medications to be absorbed.
The Effect
The inability of the medications being absorbed is one of the leading causes for prolonged migraines. If medication is unable to be absorbed, how can it effectively treat a migraine? Blood circulation is often affected as well by the sympathetic system and can lead to a paleness of one’s face as well as lower body temperatures resulting in cold hands and feet. Many of the frustrating symptoms associated with migraine headaches such as: increased sensitivity to light, sound and blurred vision stem from our body’s natural response to stress.
Since our body is naturally designed to stand up and fight, we must discover a way to manipulate the body into thinking there is no reason to become alarmed. One way we can trick our bodies into behaving during the onset of a migraine headache is by adding daily supplements such as ginger, magnesium and feverfew natural calmers. If our body is in a naturally calm state it is unable to sense that something may not be 100% OK. Natural supplements have been scientifically proven to help reduce the frequency of migraines.
