When looking for natural remedies for troublesome migraine pains, does oil often come to your mind? It’s doubtful that your first thought for healing potential would go to herbal oils, but there are three that have really shown great success in adding in reducing the intensity and frequency of migraine headaches.
Just A Dab Will Do
Essential Oils, for the most part, are an inexpensive and very popular form of treatment for many different health ailments. Oils are easily accessible and have no adverse side effects, when use appropriately. So how can a small dab of essential oils change your pesky pain? If you are not comfortable with the boiling water, you can place several drops in the bathtub and soak in the tub for 20 minutes inhaling the vapors to find similar relief.
Lavender Oil is known as an alternative analgesic, pain reliever. The use of lavender oil has had tremendous success in eliminating the onset of migraines. There are several techniques available when using lavender. First you can simply massage a small amount of oil into your temples, forehead or the base of the neck. Lavender can be an overwhelming scent, so be mindful of amount and location if your nose tends to be more sensitive. Another option is the use of a lavender pillow. Depending on the size of the pillow, you can either lie down with it or place it gently over your eyes and inhale the aroma while relaxing. Similar to peppermint, lavender can also be used to enhance the calming and tension-reducing powers of a warm bath. Simply place 5-6 drops of lavender in your bath and soak for 15-20 minutes. Be sure bath is warm enough to create some steam for you to inhale the vapors. Lavender cannot be taken orally.
Basil has a lot more to offer than just a wonderful addition to your pizza or pasta dishes. In its oil form, the strong aroma of basil oil can provide a powerful pain-relieving punch. This herb works as a muscle relaxant, so it aids in reducing migraine discomfort by relieving muscle tension. To get your much needed relief, simply inhale the basil oil vapors directly from the bottle. A few deep inhales of the aroma will kick the brain into overdrive producing chemicals to repair areas of pain. If this method isn’t comfortable for you, you may massage the basil oil into your temples. Unlike the lavender or peppermint oil, basil oil must be diluted before applying to the skin.
Be Cautious
While each of these essential oils is completely natural, they can have side effects and may cause allergic reactions. Be sure to discuss your desire to incorporate essential oil into your treatment plan with your physician, to ensure the oils won’t have any adverse reaction with current medication you may be taking. Here are some things to be mindful of when using these oils. Basil oil can irritate sensitive skin and could cause you to become overexcited. Peppermint Oil seems to be safe to use, but could cause heartburn. Lavender oil only shows risks of skin irritation. Be sure to test skin sensitivity in a small area before applying a larger amount. Each of these oils should be avoided when pregnant or breastfeeding, as little research has been done regarding their safety during these times.
