Pregnancy is supposed to be one of the most joyous times in a woman’s life. But for some women, the symptoms they experience during pregnancy can make it a very difficult time. One of these symptoms is the migraine headache.
Migraines Are Different
Migraine headaches are very different from everyday tension type of headaches that can be chased away with an over the counter medication. No, migraine headaches are far worse, and often require heavy duty prescription pain killers for any hope of relief. Unfortunately for pregnant women this is not an option they have available to them. The risk of prescription pain killers is too high for their unborn child and doctors often will only allow acetaminophen to be taken sparingly.
What To Do
There are natural alternatives that can be done to help cope with the pain without heavy medications. When the migraine approaches try lying down on the left side. This will help keep the blood flowing properly which is very important to keep the pain from getting worse. Always have a cold gel pack handy, if this is not possible you can use a cold wash cloth instead. Apply the cold gel packs to the back of the neck. Alternate the compresses between the neck and the other areas of pain for instance, the temple area. Cold compresses will help reduce swelling in the blood vessels which is what typically causes the migraine. If able, keep the lights off and sound to a minimum to reduce nerve sensory reactions. Talk to your doctor about the use of herbal teas or herbal supplements to treat pain. Herbs to ask about would be ginger, peppermint, lemon balm, and gingko biloba. They can be found in supplement form or in tea and have been proven to help migraines. These herbs are said to be safe during pregnancy but always to talk to your doctor first as every pregnancy is different.
Consider Chiropractic Adjustments
Migraines have been treated successfully by using chiropractic adjustments. These adjustments help open up the nerve pathways and keep everything in proper alignment. Chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy are perfectly safe. One might want to consider regularly scheduled visits for adjustments and massage to prevent migraines from reoccurring.
