Though many may not understand it there is actually a beneficial correlation to be had between migraines and chiropractic manipulation. Migraines by definition are severe and pulsating headaches that are often associated with autonomic symptoms such as blurred vision, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, as well as sensitivity to light and sound. A migraine can last anywhere from four to seventy hours and individuals who suffer from them are often placed completely out of commission because of the sheer pain and other symptoms that are associated with the attack. The need to find migraine relief for these individuals is of utmost importance.
How does Chiropractic Manipulation Help?
Chiropractic care involves the use of spinal manipulation, adjustments of the soft tissues and joints, and often will additionally use massage therapy as an aid in helping to find migraine relief. Research has shown that often migraine attacks can be traced back to the misalignment of the muscles and nerves along the spinal cord all the way down to the lower and back up to the shoulders and neck region.
Another reason that many migraines can originate from the misalignment of the spine and vertebra is because the nerves that travel the length of the spine can also be irritated by the misalignment and cause a migraine that way. When the spinal cord, vertebra, and nerves are out of alignment a person is more susceptible to chemical imbalances in the brain which is another cause of these severe forms of headaches. Recent studies however have shown that when a Chiropractor can successfully relieve the pressure against inflamed nerves surrounding the spinal cord migraine relief can be achieved.
Chiropractic care in regards to migraine relief is much more of a holistic approach in treatment. This type of care deals with many of the causative factors behind a migraine attack, and by relieving the restriction in movement within the neck, muscle tension within the neck, as well as muscle tension in and around the upper back and shoulders then migraine relief can take place.
When correctly used, chiropractic care and periodic adjustments (also called spinal manipulations) can keep the spine and cervical bones more correctly aligned which can effectively allow for migraine relief and sometimes even complete elimination. Additional studies have shown that when spinal manipulation is used specifically for tension or migraine headaches the migraine relief that is achieved is as effective if not more effective than prescription medications.
