There are many different techniques or “magic pills” that promise the effects of migraine prevention. But finding migraine prevention is no joke for the millions of individuals who are chronic sufferers. By definition a migraine is a chronic neurological disorder that is commonly associated with many additional symptoms. A migraine attack or episode is usually pain that is felt unilaterally or pulsating, this pain can last anywhere from two to seventy two hours and symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, sensitivity to sound, as well as visual, sensory, language, or even motor disturbances. A specific cause for the migraine is still unknown, but there are many factors such as triggers, genetics, and pre dispositions that occur in individuals who experience them on a chronic basis. The main issue with migraine attacks (of course this is in addition to the pain and symptoms they experience) is that they leave the individual incapacitated for hours to days on end and interfere with their daily lives and productivity.
There are many different options that one can consider for finding migraine prevention. Some of those options include acupuncture, biofeedback, as well as massage and chiropractic care, or the use of supplemental or herbal treatments. Research has shown that Chiropractic or Spinal Manipulation therapy has been a proven method for persons seeking an alternative (from prescription medications) for migraine prevention. In the case of tension and migraine headaches, manipulative therapy can be as effective as preventative medications in helping to keep off the onset of migraines. Once a migraine has begun, chiropractic therapy can also greatly reduce the painful symptoms if care is given in a timely manner.
Spinal Manipulation
Studies have shown that many migraines are often originated from the spine, often because of misalignment of the vertebra which then can irritate the nerves that travel the length of the spine to the brain. This misalignment makes an individual more susceptible to chemical imbalance within the brain which can also cause a migraine. Researchers note that manipulating the vertebrae (or spinal manipulation), a chiropractor’s specialty, can relieve the pressure against the irritated nerves and can in turn relieve the migraine pain. Chiropractic treatment also deals with many of the causative factors to migraine headaches such as relieving the restriction in the muscles and movement in the neck, muscle tension in the neck, as well as muscle tension in the upper back and shoulders which when not corrected can lead to posture problems that may in fact influence migraine headache occurrences. If correctly used as a form of migraine prevention, periodic adjustments (or spinal manipulations) can help keep the spine and cervical bones properly aligned in order to help with migraine prevention. Studies have shown that individuals who receive periodic adjustments can begin to feel when their spine begins to get out of line and a simple visit to the chiropractors office for and adjustment can ward off the onset of a migraine before one begins, thus successfully providing migraine prevention.
