If I told you there was an herb that had the potential to cut the frequency of your migraines in half, would you want to learn more? Of course you would. According to researchers at two separate universities, such an herb does exist and it’s called Butterbur.
What Is Butterbur?
Butterbur is an herb that has been used for nearly 2,000 years as a medicinal treatment for ailments such as pain, headache, anxiety, fever and gastrointestinal conditions. It is grown as a shrub, where after its leaves, roots and rhizomes are harvested for medicinal use.
Butterbur & Migraine Relief
For those suffering from debilitating migraines, relief cannot come soon enough. Among the lesser-known but highly effective remedies is butterbur. In a study conducted by The Department of Neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, researchers concluded that butterbur was an effective and tolerated treatment for the prevention of migraines.
According to a clinical trial conducted by The Department of Neurology at The University of Gessen in Germany, patients who took butterbur reported a 52% reduction in migraines. Additional studies have shown that patients taking the highest dosage, 75mg, report the most positive results. Of patients taking that dosage, two-thirds reported a decrease of at least 50% in the frequency of their migraines.
Migraine Relief for Children & Adolescents
Among the most promising aspects of butterbur in the treatment of migraines is its effectiveness in helping children and young adults. According to another German clinical trial involving children and adolescent migraine sufferers, 77% of participants reported at least a 50% reduction in the frequency of attacks. Some results showed a reduction as high as 63%. Perhaps most promising was that of the 289 patients that participated, 91% felt a substantial improvement after four months of treatment.
What are the risks?
Butterbur contains a natural toxin called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), which can cause damage to the liver and other bodily harm over time. When taking butterbur, you should only use products that are certified as “PA-Free”, such as that contained within our Migraine Support Formula. Certified PA-free forms of butterbur are free of the harmful toxin and provide a pure form of butterbur safe for consumption. As always, consult your doctor before taking any supplement for your migraines.
