If you’re anything like me, you look for any excuse to have caffeine. Caffeine is a wonderful “upper” that serves as a great aid in helping one get through his or her day (especially when they are a mommy to a toddler, works full time and attempts to maintain a pristine home). If it were not for my Keurig coffee maker, I am convinced my whole body would shut down and never move again.
For those that suffer with chronic migraines, caffeine can become a vital part of one’s daily treatment in avoiding a migraine headache. Migraine headaches are considered a vascular headache due to the impact migraines have on the brains arteries. Migraine causes are still being researched and new information released yearly on possible migraine causes. Though information is still being gathered and sifted through regarding what causes migraine, there has been some success in discovering possible migraine triggers.
Migraine Trigger Or Treatment?
Migraine triggers are factors that play a large part in the onset of a migraine headache. Vascular headaches develop when the blood vessels in the brain begin to enlarge and release harmful chemicals into the brain to attack the arteries. The attacking of the brains arteries leads to a series of symptoms and migraine pain that could last up to several days.
Migraine triggers are known to be possible causes for the start of this painful cycle. Migraine triggers can be anything from a physiological change to an environmental one. Migraine triggers include any of the following:
- Stress
- Poor Sleeping Habits
- Chocolate
- Weather
- Foods
- Odors
- Alcohol
- Lighting
Caffeine can also be considered a migraine trigger when it is consumed in large doses. Though caffeine can be thought of as a migraine trigger, caffeine is also a common ingredient in several medications used to treat migraine headaches. Caffeine additives are said to help increase the effectiveness of migraine medication by 40%!
If used correctly and under the careful watch of a medical professional, certain forms of caffeine can be a helpful migraine treatment. Caution must be had due to the addictive nature of caffeine and the possible side effects it can have such as: anxiety, involuntary muscle spasms, insomnia as well as possible stomach pain.
