Migraine sufferers have to always be on their guard because they never know when a migraine trigger will appear and this can be very stressful and time consuming. They have to be careful as to what they do and how they take care of their bodies. Caffeine is a strong trigger for migraine headaches. Most people can drink and eat up as much caffeine as they want and not feel anything, outside of the buzz of energy charging through their blood stream. While migraine patients who are sensitive to stimulants like caffeine, they must take care to watch out for all drink and foods that could contains any amount of caffeine as some victims are extremely sensitive and could begin the migraine after just one sip or nibble.
A Change In Factors
The body reaction to a developing migraine differs between migraine patients but they all end with the same conclusion – intense head pain. So to help you in minimizing the head pain that may be there, I am going to list several risk factors for migraine headaches. If you check more than two risk factors off, then you might want to be proactive and speak with your primary care physician as soon as possible.
1) Family Genetics – A rather large statistic says that those individuals that come from a family history of migraine sufferers will most likely be at risk of suffering from chronic migraines as well.
2) Medical Concerns – Men and women that have a history of medical concerns such as depression, anxiety, stroke, epilepsy and high blood pressure are more susceptible to migraines than people who have not suffered with any of the listed medical concerns.
3) Age – Your age can be a risk factor; you are still in an age group where migraine headaches can be common occurrences, if you are between the ages of 15 and 55. During childhood, migraines are less frequent to not nonexistent. Research has shown that children who suffer from migraines typically will grow out of them as they age, unless other factors are involved. So be sure to know what factor increase the chances of having migraine so your child won’t have to suffer as you do.
4) Gender – Out of the millions of people that suffer with migraines 18% of the migraine sufferers are women. This statistic is not limited to the United States only but relevant to women across the globe. During childhood or adolescents, the frequencies of migraines between sexes were not that different but a drastic increase in migraine headaches in females become apparent as they neared puberty. The reason being that as a female enters puberty her hormone levels, especially her estrogen levels. It is common for women to complain of migraines during her monthly menstrual, these headaches are often referred to as menstrual migraines. And because of these hormones changes and that men don’t have them, migraine are more prevalent in men than women.
Prescription That Count
When it comes to migraine treatment, many doctors prefer to give their patients drugs because there is still too little known about migraines to really stop them; so they tend to do what they know than try to find safer methods of treatment:
• Triptans – New prescription medication called triptans is now available on the market and is geared toward relieving migraine pressure. Triptans have two important abilities: they are able to constrict blood vessels and they create an upset in the process which leads into a migraine by disturbing the sequence of chemicals that inflict pain or irritation to the nerves. Triptans have been useful in the treatment of migraine pain, however there are a few risks involved that those considering treating their migraines with triptans ought to be aware of. The most common side effects associated with triptans are but not limited to: drowsiness, facial reddening, fatigue, tightening in the chest, tightening in the throat and also dizziness.
• Ergots – Much like it’s Triptan brother, the Ergot also constricts the blood vessels in order to stop the expand that creates the migraine in the first place. However, Ergots tend to focus on blood vessels in and around major organs of the body such as the liver, heart and other systems. And since Ergots and triptans were never designed for migraine treatment but for high blood pressure treatment, some people have even died from heart attacks due to taking this medication consistently.
