Hemiplegic migraines are a subtype of migraine from a main group named migraine with aura. Migraines are complex neurological disorders. These disorders mostly include headaches some of the times but not always. Before a person gets a migraine, they may experience a range of other symptoms that can be considered warning signs that a migraine is on its’ way. Early symptoms are known as auras. These auras can cause disturbances that can be temporary. These can occur in one or more of the following ways:
●Speech
●Language
●Hearing
●Vision
●Muscle control
Most migraine sufferers complain that visual disturbances are one of the most common symptoms that they suffer from when they have aura. With patients who have the severe subtype of aura migraines, the hemiplegic migraine they complain that muscle weakness and even paralysis can produce extreme pain that in some patients can cause a temporary stroke like paralysis.
What Type Of Symptoms Do Hemiplegic Migraines Have?
A person who has hemiplegic migraines can have symptoms that range in pain and just like migraine headaches can be unique and unpredictable from person to person. Symptoms of hemiplegic migraine often times start in the patients’ childhood and for some patients can disappear in their adulthood. For example, patients could experience minimal headache pain but still experience extreme paralysis.
Symptoms Of A Hemiplegic Migraine Could Include:
●Loss of coordination and balance
●Dizziness
●Vomiting and nausea
●Confusion
●Sensitivity to light and sound
●Weakness of muscles
●Numbness affecting your arm, leg, and possibly face

When dealing with a hemiplegic migraine, it is a common trait for the aura to be more severe and can last longer than other types of migraine with aura. Symptoms vary in duration, ranging from five minutes to sometimes an hour. Although rare, some people can gradually develop difficulty with their movement or coordination ability that can be long lasting.
What Can Cause A Hemiplegic Migraine?
As a result of research, it is been determined that there are three identified genes that are connected with hemiplegic migraines and these are:
●CACNA1A
●ATP1A2
●SCN1A
Any mutation or defect in any of the above listed genes can lead to problems with the body having the ability to make a certain protein. This protein is one that is needed among nerve cells.
This mutation or defect is found to be inherited in most people who have hemiplegic migraines that come from a parent who also had the same condition.
If you experience any of these symptoms of a hemiplegic migraine, you should contact your physician and request that he or she conduct a full evaluation.
