When a migraine attacks, there is not much a person can do but sit and wait it out. One of the most frustrating aspects of dealing with migraine headaches is that they do not have a cure and unless a preventative migraine treatment plan is in place, there is very little that can be done once the migraine reaches its climactic point. A migraine headache can become debilitating very quickly making it nearly impossible for a migraine patient to function at a normal level when reeling with such intense head pain.
A migraine headache is often mistaken for a tension or sinus headache. Migraines are very different from both tension and sinus headaches due to the fact that a migraine develops neurologically. Neurologically a migraine causes a chemical shifting in the brain due to the chemicals released into the brain when the blood vessels begin to expand. The throbbing / pounding sensation in the head intensifies throughout a migraine making it extremely difficult to remain cognitively cohesive throughout the migraine duration.
Treating migraine pain is the goal to functioning while suffering with a migraine. There are two different approaches to treating migraine pain:
- Prescription Medication
- Natural / Holistic Treatments
Some migraine sufferers try to add a third approach to migraine treatment and that approach would be the use of over the counter medicines.
Over-the-counter medication can help relieve migraine pain temporarily and should be administered as instructed by the manufacturer. There are two types of over the counter medication.
- Acetaminophen (a.k.a. Tylenol)
- Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID)
Acetaminophen
Acetaminophen is often taken to help reduce mild pain such as: headaches, backaches, muscle aches toothaches and even mild cold symptoms. Acetaminophen is a pain reliever that relieves pain by changing the way the body feels pain by lowering the body temperature. If taken in large doses over a long period of time, damage can be caused to the liver and the kidneys.
Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID)
NSAID is typically used in conditions where chronic pain is felt. The purpose of NSAID is to relieve pain where inflammation has occurred. There are two forms of NSAID:
- Aspirin
- Aleve
- Motrin
- Advil
- Non-aspirin
- Ibuprofen
- Motrin IB
