The population of migraine sufferers in the United States is huge and growing daily. Nearly three times as many women are diagnosed with migraines as men. Migraines are pulsating headaches, often felt on only one side of the head. Symptoms vary from person to person, as does the intensity and frequency of each episode. If you suffer from chronic headaches, what are the tell-tale signs that they may actually be migraines?
Basic Migraine Indicators
These are just a few of the most common signals associated with migraine attacks. Should you notice these consistently accompanying your headaches, speak with your physician.
Aura – visual disturbances, such as flickering lights, spots or lines developing in the line of vision. An aura may last anywhere from five minutes to an hour before the actual pain of a migraine begins.
Mood Swings– sudden changes of mood such as depression, overexcitement, anxiety, or even a desire for isolation.
Sleep Disturbances– A lack of restful sleep is a common problem for migraine sufferers. Waking up still tired or having difficulty going to sleep frequently reported. Poor sleep increases the risk of frequency and intensity of attacks.
Eye Pain– migraine pain can often burrow behind the eye and cause an uncomfortable pressure, leaving you wanting to just close your eyes.
Frequent Urination- this symptom is known as a prodrome, it is an indicator that a migraine is on the way. If you are going more than usual, take notice!
Throbbing Pain – This is the most common symptom of a migraine. You will experience a pulsating pain that radiates from the area around your temple. The pain can be felt on both or just one side of the head. Some also report the same pulsating pain around the base of the skull.
Nausea or Vomiting-According to an American Migraine Study, nearly ¾ of all migraine sufferers experience nausea or vomiting before or during an attack. Those with consistent nausea pain with migraines are twice as likely to struggle with finding relief for their pain, as it may be difficult to keep medication down.
Document any new or sudden changes in symptoms you experience during chronic headaches to help doctor make a proper diagnosis.
