What is it about a migraine headache that moves it from one stage of horrid pain to another stage of complete migraine misery? It is true that a migraine headache can move through one stage to another at an amazingly slow agonizing pace that seems to last forever. A migraine develops in the brain over a period of days; it starts with the encounter of a migraine trigger and several days later the encounter with the migraine trigger leads to the enlarging of the blood vessels in the brain. The enlarging of the blood vessels can take up to three days to fully expand and during their enlarging the pain they set off is a throbbing / pounding sensation.
Migraine misery is something more than twenty million men and women deal with each year and they do so with a lack of anticipation. The body takes time to change and move from one migraine stage to the next and it is up to the migraine sufferer to know what signs and symptoms to be aware of for each given migraine stage. There are four stages that a migraine moves through and each migraine stage has its own unique symptoms and timeline that can alert the migraine sufferer of when one stage is ending and another is starting.
Prodrome stage – the prodrome stage is the first stage of a migraine and the first stage is the most effective time to treat the migraine and where treatment should be implemented. The symptoms that come with the prodrome stage are easily missed so it takes time to learn the warning signs that are so easily missed. The preemptive warning signs would include the following symptoms and develop sever days before the onset of any pain:
- Fatigue
- Obsessive Yawning
- Food Cravings
- Bouts Of Depression
Aura – the aura stage is not had in every migraine sufferer but for those who do endure this stage of a migraine deals with symptoms that affect his or her vision such as blurred vision, black spots behind the eyes and dizziness several hours before the third stage.
Headache – the climatic stage of the intense levels of pain, This particular stage can last for several days and includes the worse of migraine symptoms such as:
- Nausea
- Vomiting

- Cognitive Confusion
- Diarrhea
Postdrome – final stage that can last several days and cause a lingering of mild head pain, muscle weakness and a little bit of confusion.
