The intense pain that migraine headache sufferers endure can be treated with 2 approaches. These two treatments are abortive and preventative. Migraine headache sufferers also may turn to other therapies including chiropractic care and the use of Botox.
Abortive
The goal of abortive treatment is to stop a migraine headache once it has started. The prescribed medicine is used to stop a migraine headache during the prodrome stage. The prodrome stage is the very beginning stage of a migraine headache. If this medication is used too early or too late it may not help with the symptoms. This type of medication is not taken on a daily basis, it taken only when needed.
Abortive medications include tablets, capsules, wafers that melt on the tongue and a self-injection into the thigh. Sometimes it can take several tries to figure out the exact medication, type of medication, and dosage because each patient reacts differently. Some of the medications are designed to help with other symptoms of a migraine headache. These medications are also designed to start working very quickly.
Abortive medications include triptans and narcotic drugs. These medications can also be prescribed in conjunction with anti-nausea medications.
Preventative
Doctors begin to consider preventative migraine headache medication if a suffer experiences more than one migraine headache per week. The goal of preventative medications is to lessen the frequency and severity of each migraine headache. Preventative medication is typically taken on a daily basis. Doctors commonly use medications such as beta-blockers, antidepressants, antiseizure medications and antihistamines to prevent migraine headaches.
Preventative medications will not stop all migraine headaches. There is not a specific medication that doctors are able to use that is designed for migraine headache prevention.
Alternative therapy
Botox, or botulinum toxin, has been found effective for some migraine headache sufferers. Botox injections into the forehead, typically has been used to prevent migraine headaches.
Migraine headache sufferers can also turn to chiropractic care or acupuncture.
The alternative methods listed above, are commonly used once migraine headache sufferers begin to feel frustrated with the medications not working. Since each migraine headache sufferer experiences the pain and symptoms differently, it can be very difficult to treat.
