Migraine Headaches: The Four Stages
The pain of a migraine headache is undeniable and no one in their right mind can shrug off the pain that is associated with them. Migraines have the ability to prevent an individual from functioning at normal product levels due to the intensity of the head pain and the symptoms associated with them. There are so many people that have no clue as to just how painful a migraine headache truly is. They have this impression that a migraine is nothing more than just a really bad headache but that is not the case.
Migraines if reoccurring are thought to be a neurological condition due to the chemical changes that occur in the brain as a result of the way a migraine develops. A migraine develops by the enlarging of the blood vessels in the brain. As the blood vessels in the brain enlarge, they begin to release a harmful chemical into the brain that begins to attack the brains arteries releasing miserable migraine symptoms. A migraine progresses through four distinct stages that cause the migraine sufferer to experience worsening migraine pain with each passing stage.
Prodrome Stage – Prodrome is the first stage of a migraine. It is during this first migraine stage that several preemptive warning signs take place. A preemptive warning sign alerts the individual and reminds them that migraine treatment should be implemented as soon as possible. During this first stage, no head pain is felt only fatigue, irritability, depression and excessive yawning.
Aura Stage – The second stage is the aura stage and not every migraine patient will encounter the aura stage. The aura stage is when vision difficulties are had such as blurred vision, black spots behind the eyes, hallucinations, blindness in one eye and dizziness or extreme vertigo. The aura stage lasts only for a few hours before the third and worse migraine stage of all.
Headache Stage – The headache stage is quite possibly the most painful stage of all. It is during this third migraine stage that the pain reaches its climatic point and the pain is debilitating. It is during this stage that the throbbing / pounding head pain occurs as well as nausea, vomiting, constipation and cognitive complications.
Postdrome Stage – The fourth and final migraine stage is the Postdrome stage. This last stage implies that the end is in sight but not before a few more lingering symptoms. The symptoms tend to leave you feeling as if you were out drinking all night and are now “hung-over.” The Postdrome stage last for a few days and the migraine sufferer will continue to have mild head pain, tiredness and muscle soreness with some low-level nausea and vomiting.
