Anyone who has ever suffered from migraine headaches knows how debilitating these headaches can be. Now there are ways to prevent migraine headaches from occurring before they start. In the 1980’s, doctors focused on helping reduce the pain from migraines by use of drugs once the migraine began. However, now there are some ways to help prevent these headaches before they happen.
TREATMENTS FOR MIGRAINE PREVENTION
One method for preventing migraines is to take non-migraine drugs daily. These drugs affect brain chemicals and blood vessel inflammation that cause migraines.
Another way is to fine tune treatments for each migraine sufferer. In other words, use fewer drugs, have fewer side effects, and gain more control over this debilitating condition. Using this method, patients become more self-aware when it comes to their body’s patterns, what triggers their migraines, and certain drugs to take during their vulnerability time, that window of time when they will benefit most from the drug. Knowledge of your symptoms during the prodrome stage of migraine (the first stage before pain sets in) is beneficial in order to predict when a migraine is coming.
DRUGS FOR MIGRAINE PREVENTION
Personally, I am not one to use drugs for treatment when there are other options that will work as well. However, when you’re in pain, all that matters is that the medicine relieves the pain with no other or little side effects.
A new drug, Trexima, is being developed to help prevent migraine headaches from occurring. The way this drug prevents migraine is to prevent blood vessels from dilating by preventing the release of an inflammatory enzyme that causes the blood vessel dilation – hence, the migraine headache. Another drug that would help prevent migraine works by impeding a protein (CGRP) that is released during inflammation. Migraine sufferers have high levels of this protein.
KNOWING YOUR WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY
When you suffer from migraine, it is important to know your window of opportunity for prevention of the condition. Those women who suffer from menstrual migraines or those who are well aware of their triggers for migraine can benefit from a treatment that uses a drug during the preventive window. Stress, bright lights, weather and altitude changes, smells, cheeses, caffeine, MSG, and others can cause the onset of a migraine. Studying your own body and its reactions to these and other factors can help in prevention of future migraines.
Certain supplements have also shown promise in tackling the prevention of migraines. According to at least two clinical trials, magnesium, riboflavin (B-2), and coenzyme Q10 all meet the criteria in migraine prevention that show benefit.
Clearly, there are treatments and medicines that can help prevent migraine headaches. The key is your own body awareness of its triggers, reactions to medicines, and knowledge of symptoms of the prodrome stage of migraine. Armed with this defense, you can attack your migraine before it starts.
